Yamaha has unveiled what it claims is a close to race-ready YZF-R6 at the EICMA show in Milan. The reveal marks the Japanese manufacturer’s first step in preparing its customers and racers for what’s to come in the next year, when the YZF-R6 will chase glory in the 2017 FIM Supersport World Championship.
First revealed last month, the new R6 has already undergone design changes for the 2017 model year, sporting a look inspired by the latest generation MotoGP and WorldSBK models – the M1-type central forced air intake, recessed LED twin headlights and new YZF-R1 style tail just being three examples.
The race-prepped machine displayed at EICMA includes further modifications, chief among them being the full race fairing consisting of a two-piece front and single piece seat, an Akrapovič Evo full titanium exhaust, 320 mm dual Brembo T-drive front brakes, a Brembo rear caliper, 43 mm forks with Öhlins cartridges, and WorldSSP-spec Pirelli Diablo tyres.
Yamaha engineers say the EICMA version is very similar to next year’s racing bike due to the championship’s regulations that only allow minor alterations to be made to the production bike’s cylinder head, gearbox, suspension, rear shock, front fork, electronic system and brake discs.
