2016 Chevrolet Lifts Lid on Camaro Convertible

Driving is one of the memories that cannot be forgotten, especially if you drive one of the most iconic muscle cars.

Chevrolet has revealed the convertible model of the all-new 2016 Camaro, featuring what the American automaker says is the most advanced in its segment.

"From the very beginning, the Camaro architecture was developed to combine convertibles with uncompromising driving dynamics," said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro's chief engineer.

The architecture also allows the convertible's electro-hydraulic powered top to fold completely below the belt line. The hard tonneau cover automatically covers the folded top, creating a finished look. “With many convertibles, you have to manually attach the tonneau cover – when you're done,” explains design director Tom Peters.

Like the Camaro coupe, this convertible gets a stiffer and lighter structure that helps reduce the total vehicle weight by at least 90 kg compared to the model it replaces. As a result, the Camaro convertible retains the tuning and reflexes of the coupe chassis, according to the engineers.

The sixth-generation Camaro is offered in LT and SS models. Six new powertrain combinations are on offer, including the 2.0-liter Turbo producing 271 bhp, the new 3.6-liter V6 engine producing 330 bhp, and the LT1 6.2-liter V8, producing 449 bhp and 455 lb-ft of torque.

Torque – the most powerful Camaro SS ever. Each engine is paired with a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic. The 2016 Camaro coupe and convertible will both be produced at General Motors' Lansing Grand River assembly plant in Lansing, Michigan.
